Scientists from the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, together with colleagues, studied the benthic fauna of the hydrothermal communities of the Piip underwater volcano in the southwestern part of the Bering Sea. In total, 130 species of macro- and megafauna have been discovered, of which about 25% are new to science.

On July 3, 2023, the Scientific Council dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Academician Alexander Petrovich Lisitzin was held at the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology RAS. Not only employees of the institute took part in it. The meeting was attended by members of the family of Alexander Petrovich: his son Nikolai Alexandrovich, grandson Alexander Petrovich, cousin Alexander Pavlovich Ettinger, nephew Academician Andrei Borisovich Lisitsyn and others.

On July 27, 2023, Alexey Valentinovich Sokov left the post of director of the IO RAS at his own request. In accordance with the order of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation No. 10-2/198 p-o dated July 27, 2023, the temporary duties of Director of the IO RAS are assigned to the leading researcher of the Lisitzin Laboratory of Physical and Geological Research Shevchenko Vladimir Petrovich before replacing the position of director in the prescribed manner.

The Laboratory of bio-hydrochemistry is working on the offshore section of the Gelendzhik carboniferous range at the Southern Branch of the Institute of Oceanology of RAS. The purpose of the work is to assess the emission and absorption of greenhouse gases at the water-atmosphere boundary, the tasks include monitoring the content of carbon dioxide, monitoring the components of the Black Sea carbonate system (alkalinity, pH acidity index).

The staff of the Ocean Optics Laboratory carried out work in the Southern Branch of the IO RAS from June 2 to 15 on the small research boat Ashamba. A number of sub-satellite measurements of the biooptical characteristics of sea water were continued, both at stations and on the ship's course. The equipment was tested before the Arctic expedition season.
