Employees of the Museum participate in conferences, scientific schools, seminars on the problems of studying the marine heritage of Russia.
The museum cooperates with other Russian museums: the Museum of the World Ocean in Kaliningrad, the Taimyr Museum of Local History, the State Darwin Museum and the Historical Museum in Moscow.

The museum became an integral part of the IO RAS. Museum activity is one of the components of the scientific work of the Institute's staff. The Museum was founded on the desire to preserve the history of the Institute and preserve the memory of the legendary people who participated in its creation and development. This is a story about a difficult, but very interesting, expeditionary work and scientific discoveries in the study of the World Ocean.

The Center for Collective Use (CCU) of Scientific Equipment of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IO RAS) "Scientific Fleet of the IO RAS" provides comprehensive scientific expeditionary research in the World Ocean and coastal waters, and also provides services to researchers and scientific teams as a basic organization and other interested users.

Areas of activity of the CCU:

• Life sciences 
• Rational nature management
• Technologies for monitoring and predicting the state of the environment, preventing and eliminating its pollution
• Technologies for prospecting, exploration, development of mineral deposits and their extraction
• Technologies for the prevention and elimination of natural and man-made emergencies

The Center for Collective Use ensures the most efficient loading of its research vessels, equips them with modern scientific equipment, organizes the preparation of complex scientific expeditions, research and development works, floating universities, expeditions to search for sunken objects, including especially dangerous objects in the seas of Russia, monitoring the ecological state of the Russian seas in the regions intensive economic activity. The CCU is responsible for the repair, proper maintenance, operation and safety of the fleet and scientific equipment, the qualifications of crew members, transport and supply services for ships.
