The main goal of the expedition is to obtain new data on the geomorphology of the bottom of deep-water passages and in the areas of distribution of contourite drifts, on modern hydrological conditions and features of sedimentation, as well as on the Pleistocene-Holocene sedimentation conditions in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean.
Moscow City Architecture Committee has approved the project of the Center for Biogeochemical and Information Technologies at the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of RAS, said the chief architect of the capital Sergey Kuznetsov. In the period from 10 to 18 October 2021, the 24th expedition of the IO RAS to the Aral Sea took place. Within the framework of a joint project, scientists from the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of RAS and the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (Berlin), in cooperation with the Karakalpak Scientific Research Institute of Natural Sciences (Nukus), conducted comprehensive marine research in the central part of the western basin of the Great Aral seas.

The scientific program of the expedition "Investigation of the state of radioactive underwater potentially hazardous objects (UPHO) in the Kara Sea and their impact on regional ecology in 2021" has been successfully completed in full. The goals set for the expedition of the 85th cruise of the RV Akademik Mstislav Keldysh to provide scientific support for the rehabilitation of the Arctic region from flooded and sunken objects with spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste (RW) in 2021 have been achieved, and the tasks have been successfully solved.
September 13, 2021 20 years since the signing of the Order on the establishment of the North-West Branch of Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of RAS. The department was created on the basis of the Arkhangelsk Scientific Expeditionary Station.
From June 30 to July 14, 2021, the next voyage of one of the flagships of the Russian scientific fleet - the vessel "Akademik Sergei Vavilov", carried out by the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of RAS (IO RAS). All tasks stipulated by the flight program were completed. The route of the expedition passed through the entire Baltic - from the southeastern part through the Central Baltic to the Gulf of Finland. Thanks to the permits received from the Baltic countries, studies were carried out not only in Russian waters, but also in Finnish and Swedish waters, which is extremely important for monitoring the state of the Baltic ecosystem as a whole, and not its individual basins, because nature knows no boundaries.
