Scientists from the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, together with employees of the Nenetsky State Nature Reserve, managed to conduct unique bioacoustic work on a walrus rookery in the Pechora Sea. For the first time, Russian specialists have been able to record the underwater voices of an Atlantic walrus in the wild. The data obtained will help to better understand the behavior of pinnipeds and protect them from the influence of shipping noise and other anthropogenic activity in the region.

Sailboat expeditions. To be continued

The 1st voyage on the schooner "Amazon" has ended. The expedition continues a series of voyages on sailing ships to remote areas of the World Ocean in order to study the stocks, biodiversity and evolution of oceanic plankton. In the current circumstances, sailing vessels allow exploring areas of the ocean where large Russian scientific vessels are unlikely to reach in the foreseeable future.

Scientists from the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology (IO) RAS, for the first time in the world, have conducted a large-scale study of how life on the bottom of the Arctic Ocean changes with depth. This was reported on Friday in the press service of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.

On October 17, 2022, the 52nd voyage of the RV Akademik Boris Petrov began, with a duration of 75 days. Research area: western tropical Atlantic. The head of the expedition is DSc E.G. Morozov. The purpose of the expedition: to study deep currents in the abyssal depths of the Atlantic, the processes of interaction between the ocean and continental runoff and anthropogenic pollution of the marine environment in the zone of influence of the Amazon River, as well as the development of international scientific cooperation between the BRICS countries.

Employees of the Ocean Optics Laboratory of the IO RAS Junior Researcher S.K. Klimenko and leading researcher A.Yu. Ivanov obtained interesting results on sub-satellite verification of natural oil shows detected as a result of satellite monitoring on the example of an oil show near the Maria Magdalina Bank in the Black Sea.

From August 23 to September 04, 2022, a passing expedition on the RV Akademik Mstislav Keldysh (the 88th voyage) took place to perform work on the topic: “The role of sedimentary matter of interacting geospheres in the sedimentation of the European Arctic and Subarctic under the influence of the contact of the polar and warm Atlantic water, cold (vulture) and hot (hydrothermal) fluids”, scientific adviser leading researcher Marina Kravchishina. The head of the expedition is the leading researcher Alexey Klyuvitkin.

On September 18, 2022, the 1st stage of the 89th voyage of the RV Akademik Mstislav Keldysh to the Kara Sea with associated work in the southern part of the Barents Sea was completed in the port of Murmansk. Expedition "Ecosystems of the Seas of the Siberian Arctic - 2022: Processes in the Arctic Continental Slope", carried out as part of a multi-year program of multidisciplinary research in the Kara Sea under the scientific supervision of Academician M.V. Flint, was divided into two stages.
