Eighty years ago, the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences established the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IO RAS). On the occasion of its anniversary, Gennady Krasnikov, head of the Russian Academy of Sciences, congratulated the institute's staff:

"I am pleased to congratulate you on the 80th anniversary of one of the oldest oceanological research centers, named after the outstanding scientist and one of its founders, Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences Pyotr Petrovich Shirshov. The history of your institute is inextricably linked with the work of outstanding Soviet and Russian scientists who solved the most complex scientific problems in the marine spaces of our planet.

"A comprehensive fundamental study of the World Ocean has been made possible by the fortitude and dedication of each member of the research team, which has been formed over the years of the research center's work. Furthermore, the institute's unique research fleet, which has contributed to world-class discoveries that serve humanity to this day, was of particular importance to this work," in particular, as stated in the congratulation.

The Academy President also emphasized that this significant date reflects not only the scale of the work accomplished, but also the prospects for new, in-demand scientific projects.
