Valery Falkov held a working meeting with Roman Gorbunov, Acting Director of Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The parties discussed steps to modernize research vessels, as well as plans to repair the infrastructure of the institute and its branches.

The Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences was established in 1946 by a resolution of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

The Institute is located in Moscow, has 6 branches - two in Kaliningrad (Atlantic Branch and Atlantic Fleet Base), in Gelendzhik (Southern Branch), St. Petersburg (St. Petersburg Branch), Astrakhan (Caspian Branch) and Arkhangelsk (Northwestern Branch).

The Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences conducts comprehensive research in all areas of marine science and is the only one that independently develops marine engineering.

The Institute manages Russia's largest scientific fleet, which includes vessels with unlimited navigation areas for studying Russia's seas and the World Ocean, a small fleet for conducting research in inland waters, and the unique deep-sea manned submersibles Mir.

The institute comprises 40 laboratories. Its research structure encompasses several key areas: physics, geology, marine and ocean ecology, and marine engineering.
