At the personal invitation of the First Deputy Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region – Chairman of the Government of the Arkhangelsk Region A.V. Alsufyev and the Lomonosov Foundation (President of the Foundation, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences K.V. Lobanov), leading researcher of the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Honorary Polar Explorer of Russia Sergei Viktorovich Pisarev took part in the 54th Lomonosov Readings, which will be held in 2025 on the topic ““Meeting the Sun” – the Arctic Vector of Russia (on the 500th Anniversary of the Beginning of the Development of the Northern Sea Route)”.

 

By decree of the President of the Russian Federation, Valery Veniaminovich Kovalenko, a leading researcher at Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was awarded the medal of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland," 2nd class, for his achievements in scientific work and many years of conscientious work.

 

A joint team of scientists from Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Kamchatka branch of VNIRO discovered that the influence of the tides must be taken into account to accurately predict the abundance of Russia's main commercial fish—pollock.

 

On October 22, 2025, a popular science lecture entitled "Water Dynamics and Stock Dynamics: What Links Tides and Pollock Populations?" was held at the St. Petersburg Branch of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
On November 13, Acting Director of the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences V.P. Shevchenko and Chairman of the Board of the newly established Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of the Caspian Sea in Astana S.K. Akhmetov signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which will mark the beginning of a collaboration between scientists from the two scientific organizations on joint study of the Caspian Sea.
For active participation in the Second Caspian International Hydrographic Conference on navigational and hydrographic support for shipping in the Caspian Sea, A.G. Kostianoy received a letter of thanks from the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral A.A. Moiseyev.
At the invitation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, staff members of the IO RAS, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Chief Researcher T.A. Shiganova and Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Leading Researcher A.S. Kazmin, visited the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IO CAS) (Qingdao, Shandong Province) on a working scientific visit from June 17 to July 3, 2025.

Scientists from Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences studied the Black Sea beaches for various types of pollution. In particular, oceanologies took samples of loose soil to assess the degree of pollution of the coastal strip, and also analyzed the state of microphytobenthos - microalgae, cyanobacteria and protozoa capable of photosynthesis and developing in the surface layer of bottom sediments.

 

On August 11-12, a visiting meeting of the Council under the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation on issues of ensuring the development of carbon balance control technologies was held. The meeting was held in the city of Volgograd at the Federal Scientific Center for Agroecology, Integrated Land Reclamation and Protective Afforestation of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

 

S.K. Klimenko and A.Yu. Ivanov, employees of the Laboratory of Ocean Optics of the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, analyzed the available data of Earth remote sensing (ERS) from space, which showed the fuel oil pollution of the Kerch Strait and the waters of the Black Sea pre-strait, which occurred as a result of the sinking of the tankers Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 on December 15, 2024.
