Arctic winter has become shorter

This is the conclusion reached by scientists from Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, after analyzing the features of changes in the duration of winter in the Russian Arctic over the past 60 years. The Arctic is a unique region in terms of research, since the climate change processes occurring here are faster than in other parts of our planet.

On April 1, 2025, a meeting of the "Physics of the Sea" section was held at Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, organized by the Department of Thermohydromechanics of the Ocean as part of the 67th MIPT Conference.

A special section has been opened on the eLIBRARY.RU website to compare bibliometric indicators of candidates in different RAS departments and scientific specialties. Elections for members of the Russian Academy of Sciences will be held from May 26 to May 30, 2025.

It's been 20 years since the establishment of the Caspian Branch of the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Since its foundation, the Branch has come a long and fruitful way in developing fundamental and applied research of the Caspian Sea in the interests of government agencies and sectors of the economy of the Russian Federation.

Irina Chubarenko, Head of the Laboratory of Marine Physics of the Atlantic Branch of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Elena Yesyukova, Senior Researcher at the same laboratory, were among the top ten researchers with the greatest contribution to the study of microplastic pollution of sea beaches.

The goal of the first expedition of Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences this year was to study the consequences of the fuel oil spill resulting from the sinking of two Volgoneft-class tankers on December 15, 2024.

The Open Russian Cup in Marine Robotics will be held in Astrakhan from March 24 to 30 at the corporate training center of LUKOIL-Nizhnevolzhskneft LLC.

The research of P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences is devoted to the impact of glacier melting on Arctic ecosystems. The material is dedicated to World Glacier Day, celebrated for the first time this year on March 21. The year 2025 has been declared by the UN General Assembly as the International Year of Glacier Conservation due to their intensive melting as a result of climate change.
An expedition organized at the end of February by the Atlantic Branch of Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences made it possible to obtain new data on the development of plankton communities in the Baltic Sea during the winter period.
