On January 18, 2023, on the eve of Science Day, the names of the young scientists who won the competition for the Moscow Government Prizes for young scientists in 2022 were announced. Head of S.L. Soloviev Tsunami Laboratory of Shirshov Institute of Oceanology RAS PhD (Physical and Mathematical Sciences) Igor Medvedev was awarded the the Moscow Government Prize for the cycle of works "Investigation of fluctuations in the level of inland and marginal seas in the range from minutes to centuries".

On the Day of Russian Science, Vladimir Putin presented awards in the field of science and innovation for young scientists for 2022. Alexander Osadchiev, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences from the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, is among those awarded. The solemn ceremony took place in the Kremlin. Five laureates were awarded for research in the field of oil production, oceanology, chemical analysis, as well as the development of technology for testing complex technical devices.

The 63rd voyage of PS Akademik Ioffe to the eastern tropical Atlantic (September 29, 2022 – December 7, 2022) has ended. The expedition was organized by the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences, with the participation of the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University and the Federal Research Center of the Institute of Bio-Science Mining, Russian Academy of Sciences. The head of the expedition is the chief researcher of the IO RAS, DSc E.V. Ivanova.

The 52nd voyage of the RV Akademik Boris Petrov started on October 17, 2022. On November 21, the Brazilian phase of research work began. A detachment of coastal observations was created from 4 specialists from the IO RAS, who have solid experience in working in new climatic conditions and in unfamiliar terrain. They started their work in the city of Belen (-1.45 S, -48.48 W), which is located on the coast of Marajo Bay (Brazil). The purpose of the detachment was to assess the ecological situation of the coastal zone of the Amazonian selva within the littoral zones of the Atlantic, estuaries and estuarine areas of rivers.

About the carbon polygons project

Today, 17 carbon polygons operate in different regions of the Russian Federation. The Institute of Oceanology is the operator of one of these polygons based on the Southern Branch in Gelendzhik: 7 ha + 4 ha + connection of a 15 ha + 12 km sea coast area to a depth of 700 m. On the basis of the polygons, researchers measure and monitor greenhouse gas fluxes: carbon dioxide CO2, methane CH4, nitrous oxide NO and some others.

Scientists from the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, together with employees of the Nenetsky State Nature Reserve, managed to conduct unique bioacoustic work on a walrus rookery in the Pechora Sea. For the first time, Russian specialists have been able to record the underwater voices of an Atlantic walrus in the wild. The data obtained will help to better understand the behavior of pinnipeds and protect them from the influence of shipping noise and other anthropogenic activity in the region.

Sailboat expeditions. To be continued

The 1st voyage on the schooner "Amazon" has ended. The expedition continues a series of voyages on sailing ships to remote areas of the World Ocean in order to study the stocks, biodiversity and evolution of oceanic plankton. In the current circumstances, sailing vessels allow exploring areas of the ocean where large Russian scientific vessels are unlikely to reach in the foreseeable future.

Scientists from the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology (IO) RAS, for the first time in the world, have conducted a large-scale study of how life on the bottom of the Arctic Ocean changes with depth. This was reported on Friday in the press service of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.

On October 17, 2022, the 52nd voyage of the RV Akademik Boris Petrov began, with a duration of 75 days. Research area: western tropical Atlantic. The head of the expedition is DSc E.G. Morozov. The purpose of the expedition: to study deep currents in the abyssal depths of the Atlantic, the processes of interaction between the ocean and continental runoff and anthropogenic pollution of the marine environment in the zone of influence of the Amazon River, as well as the development of international scientific cooperation between the BRICS countries.

Employees of the Ocean Optics Laboratory of the IO RAS Junior Researcher S.K. Klimenko and leading researcher A.Yu. Ivanov obtained interesting results on sub-satellite verification of natural oil shows detected as a result of satellite monitoring on the example of an oil show near the Maria Magdalina Bank in the Black Sea.
